Closure and remediation agreement signed for Smederevo’s Godominsko Polje landfill

The Vice President of the Government and Minister of Environmental Protection, Irena Vujović, signed an agreement to start closure and remediation work for an unsanitary landfill in Godominsko Polje. The site is located on the outskirts of Smederevo and has been improperly handling waste for 40 years. The Ministry of Environmental Protection reported that the agreement was signed with Smederevo Mayor Jasmina Vojinović.

Agreement to close unsanitary landfill near Smederevo

Vujović said the project led by her ministry included building a waste transfer station in Smederevo. She stated that this was part of addressing the landfill issue for local residents. Her remarks were quoted by Tanjug.

She added that the closure and remediation effort is particularly relevant for residents living near the landfill, which covers 14 hectares. Vujović also thanked city leadership for responding to residents’ needs and preparing and submitting the project.

Waste transfer infrastructure supporting closure and remediation

Vujović said the ministry has planned significant funding in the 2025 budget to continue supporting closure and remediation of unsanitary landfills in other local governments where conditions allow. She described construction of the waste transfer station near the landfill as a key prerequisite for the closure and remediation project.

The stated purpose of the transfer station is to enable proper waste management and transportation from Smederevo and surrounding areas to a regional landfill. Vujović said this approach supports modern waste management standards across Serbia.

Recycling facilities and transport equipment provided to Smederevo

According to Vujović, a transfer station was built in Smederevo together with a recycling yard and a waste separation line. She said these facilities are intended to increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill.

She also reported that her ministry recently provided an abrol truck to help facilitate transfer and transportation of waste from the transfer station to the regional landfill. Vujović said the goal is to bring order to waste management.
