Swiss mining group Glencore has introduced the ProAc project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The programme is designed to support economic diversification, financial inclusion, and food security in the region. ProAc is positioned within the company’s broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy. It will provide financial support and skills training to local communities working in the agri-food sector.
The initiative aims to connect DRC mineral wealth with local development outcomes. Glencore says the project is intended to contribute to infrastructure improvement and workforce advancement. The company’s stated focus includes translating benefits into tangible results for communities. This work is described as part of efforts to align with DRC economic progress.
Glencore participation at Critical Minerals Africa summit
Glencore will take part in the 2024 Critical Minerals Africa (CMA) Summit. Marie-Chantal Kaninda, President of Glencore in the DRC, is scheduled to attend. She also serves as Chairman of Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), a joint venture between Glencore and Gecamines. Kaninda is set to speak at the Leaders Forum panel titled “Innovation in a New Era of African Mining.”
The panel is described as addressing emerging trends in the African mining sector. Glencore says Kaninda will share expertise related to the company’s activities and priorities in the DRC. The summit participation is framed as part of Glencore’s engagement around critical minerals. It also coincides with ongoing investment plans in the country.
Investment plans across DRC mines and refining
Glencore said it is intensifying investments tied to the DRC’s critical minerals sector. The company links these efforts to creating employment opportunities through midstream investments and projects. It cites work across both greenfield and brownfield areas. In 2022, Glencore resumed operations at its Mutanda Mine.
Glencore plans to increase production at Mutanda Mine to 5,000 metric tons starting in 2024. In addition, the company unveiled a multi-year $8 billion investment package in 2021 for several DRC projects. These include the KOV and Mashimba East Mines, the KTC Mines, and the Luilu Refinery.
Kaninda is expected to highlight Glencore’s strategic investments during her appearance at CMA. The company describes the DRC as central to meeting global demand for critical minerals. It also characterizes the country as a key contributor to the energy transition, citing its cobalt production leadership and copper mining role. Glencore attributes this position, in part, to its ongoing efforts and investments in the region.
