Road blockades launched by SEOS and allied groups
The Association of Environmental Organizations of Serbia (SEOS) has organized one-hour road blockades in two western locations as part of protests against lithium mining. The actions primarily target Rio Tinto’s Jadar project. Activists said large demonstrations could resume across Serbia if the City Assembly of Loznica approves a controversial spatial plan.
Following the initial protests, traffic disruptions were reported in Brezjak and Preljina. Both areas are near the proposed mining site in Gornje Nedeljice. The restart of blockades followed a decision by the National Assembly to reject a proposal to ban lithium and boron exploration.
Loznica mayor resignation and upcoming city assembly meeting
The political situation in Loznica has intensified after the resignation of Mayor Vidoje Petrović. The city assembly is scheduled to meet on October 25. Organizers said this meeting is the last opportunity to avoid the imposition of interim administration after a 90-day deadline.
Activists, including the local group Ne damo Jadar, raised concerns that the assembly could adopt a spatial plan that would favor the Jadar project. They said such approval could open the way for similar projects and exploration in other regions. They also noted that the plan is not currently listed for consideration at the upcoming session.
Public statements and planned next protest event
Zlatko Kokanović from Ne damo Jadar said the demonstrations are intended as a warning about possible renewed nationwide protests. Opposition parliament members attended both road blockades, according to organizers. Minister of Justice Maja Popović condemned the blockades, saying protest rights are constitutionally protected but cannot restrict citizens’ freedom of movement.
SEOS said it has scheduled its third assembly for October 27 in Gornje Nedeljice. The group indicated it plans further public engagement alongside ongoing protests.
