The Alliance of Environmental Organizations of Serbia (SEOS) sent a letter to the European Commission following the presentation of the first group of strategic projects under the EU Law on Critical Raw Materials. SEOS said it raised concerns after Rio Tinto applied for the Jadar project. The company’s proposal, according to SEOS, covers the exploitation and processing of lithium in western Serbia.
SEOS letter linked to EU critical raw materials framework
SEOS’ submission was made in response to the European Commission’s presentation of the first group of strategic projects under the EU critical raw materials framework. In its letter, SEOS expressed concern about Rio Tinto’s application for the controversial Jadar project. The group specifically associated the proposal with activities in the Jadar valley area in western Serbia.
Opposition to proposed lithium exploitation and processing
SEOS said it strongly opposed the Jadar project. The organization stated that there would be no mines in the Jadar valley regardless of any decision by the European Commission. SEOS also said the project is disastrous and harmful in numerous ways for citizens of Serbia.
SEOS further emphasized that it viewed the project as developed in a non-transparent manner. The group said it was based on corruption and involved alleged violations of the Serbian Constitution. SEOS added that it also involved violations of Serbian and international laws and conventions.
Call for EU responsibility and non-prioritization of interests
In its letter, SEOS called on Europe to act responsibly. The group expressed hope that the EU would not prioritize its own interests over the well-being of others. SEOS said it was waiting for Europe to demonstrate maturity.
The letter also referenced Serbia’s efforts related to European values and fighting crime and corruption. SEOS concluded by stating that Europe should not destroy what it described as foundations on which it is built. The statements were presented as part of SEOS’ response to the European Commission’s critical raw materials process.
