Local authorities urged to halt Mazgoš project
Aleksandar Jovanović Ćuta, head of the Ecological Uprising parliamentary group, has called on the mayor of Dimitrovgrad, Vladica Dimitrov, and the city council to oppose a planned lignite mine near the village of Mazgoš and to abandon the project. The request centers on environmental compliance concerns tied to water protection for the wider Dimitrovgrad area. The proposed operation is described as occupying 20 hectares, including 4 hectares allocated for a waste dump. Jovanović also cited project figures indicating extraction of about 1.1 million tons of lignite.
Transport and waste-dump footprint raise operational oversight questions
Beyond land take, the project’s logistics are flagged as a compliance and infrastructure issue for daily traffic management through Dimitrovgrad. The plan is said to require around 80 coal-laden trucks passing through the town each day, creating sustained pressure on road safety and local air-quality controls.
